CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig announced on Monday that former KPMG managing director DJ Hennes will serve as director of the agency’s Market Participants Division.

MPD oversees the CFTC’s registrant base, including futures commission merchants, swap dealers, commodity trading advisors, commodity pool operators, introducing brokers, and retail foreign exchange dealers.

At KPMG LLP, Hennes was a managing director in the firm’s Financial Services Risk & Compliance Advisory Practice, advising wholesale market participants on governance, risk management, compliance, registration, and remediation work. Before that, he spent 15 years at Promontory Financial Group, where he led its Capital Markets Practice for the Americas.

Selig pointed to Hennes’s background in newer market areas alongside his intermediary experience.

“His experience with crypto assets and prediction markets will also be of tremendous value as we seek to future-proof the CFTC’s rules and regulations for these innovations,” Selig said.

MPD was formed in October 2020 as part of a broader agency reorganisation and is organised into three branches: Examinations, Financial Requirements, and Registration & Compliance. The CFTC’s contact directory already lists Hennes as the division’s director.
