Payments technology provider Fiserv (NASDAQ: FISV) and AI agent lab Cognition on Thursday announced a strategic partnership to deploy Cognition’s AI software engineer, Devin, across Fiserv’s core banking modernization and other engineering initiatives, aimed at shortening release cycles and speeding delivery of new capabilities to financial institution clients.

Devin is an autonomous coding agent that can understand codebases, write and test code, and iterate on its own. Fiserv said it plans to use the tool to execute complex engineering work in parallel across large codebases, expanding engineering capacity without scaling headcount.

The company said it is strengthening governance and security controls for AI-assisted development to protect the integrity of the software lifecycle.

“Speed matters more than ever in banking, and our clients are counting on us to deliver. With Devin, we can accelerate modernization of the platforms our clients run their business on, ship new capabilities faster, and free our teams to focus on the work that matters most,” said Dhivya Suryadevara, Co-President of Fiserv.

Fiserv framed the partnership as part of a broader push to embed AI across its technology operations and product development. Cognition has been positioning Devin for enterprise modernization work, including COBOL migration at Fortune 500 companies.
