UK registrar Equiniti launched Real Time Analytics on Wednesday, a feature the company says makes it the first UK registrar to offer near-real-time visibility into institutional share ownership movements. The tool provides 15-minute updates throughout the trading day and is available to Equiniti’s UK issuer clients that use both its share registration and investor relations services.
How it works
The product connects directly to Equiniti’s share registration system and tracks changes in shareholder activity since the last fully analysed share register. It generates reports showing which investment firms and funds have been buying or selling shares over that period, along with total purchase and sale activity.
A key design choice is that the tool separates lending-related movements from underlying ownership changes. In practical terms, issuers get a faster read on whether register movement reflects genuine position-building or stock-loan churn. The feature also flags register changes that may indicate interests being accumulated via derivative products, according to the company’s announcement.
Equiniti said current holdings shown by the tool are indicative rather than confirmed, but can be compared against the last fully analysed register to give a clearer ownership picture between reporting cycles.
Issuer use cases
Equiniti positions the product as helping issuers prepare for results calls, investor days and shareholder engagement, while giving earlier reads on potential activism or emerging risk.
“Today’s UK capital markets are defined by speed, complexity and heightened shareholder scrutiny, yet most issuers are still relying on monthly ownership reports to navigate them,” said Ian Smith, Director of Investor Analytics at Equiniti.
The service is available only to UK-incorporated public companies already on Equiniti’s registration and IR platform, making it both an analytics upgrade for existing clients and a retention tool within the registrar’s own stack.
