Coinbase has appointed former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne as chair of its Global Advisory Council.

The council advises Coinbase on policy, regulation, and broader developments affecting the global financial system.

Osborne, who served as the United Kingdom’s chancellor from 2010 to 2016, was the longest-serving holder of the role in recent history.

During his tenure, he represented the UK at G7 and G20 forums and was closely involved in international economic policymaking.

Since leaving government, he has held senior roles in global finance and advisory positions with major companies and institutions.

Coinbase said Osborne’s experience at the intersection of government, finance, and global markets would support the company’s efforts to engage with policymakers as the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve.

“The future of finance requires clear and sensible regulations and standards that reflect both the potential of this technology and the need to broaden access to financial services,” the company said in a statement, adding that Osborne’s leadership would help guide Coinbase’s engagement on these issues.

In his new role, Osborne will chair the advisory council as it provides strategic guidance to Coinbase on regulatory frameworks and the development of the digital asset ecosystem worldwide.
